I have run my own importation business for 5 years, and I have worked as a digital marketer for over 6 years. I have worked with fashion, hair and cosmetics brands, mostly selling through Instagram and Facebook.
My experience covers choosing one product that people already want, building content around it, turning DMs into orders, running Meta ads and tracking what brings in sales. I also spent 4 years in customer support in the fashion industry, so I understand how customers think before they buy.
I can mentor vendors in fashion, hair and cosmetics who want to grow their sales and profit. I believe in building a business on real numbers.
Hi, I’m a digital marketer and I’ve run my own importation business for 5 years, selling through Instagram and Facebook. So I’ll share what I’d do in your place.
My advice is to start with local reselling, where you don’t need your own stock or any money upfront. Pick one product that women in PNG already buy all the time, like meri blouses or trendy tops.
Here is how I would start:
Find one supplier near you. Visit a local market or boutique, and ask the seller if you can take photos and videos of their blouses and tops to post online. Many sellers will say yes, because you are sending them customers.
Open one free page. Start with Facebook, or TikTok if you like making videos. Post 1 or 2 short videos a day, like styling one blouse in different ways, showing the fabric up close, or showing what is in stock. People buy from pages they trust, so show up every day.
Take the order, then buy. When someone messages you, check with your supplier that the item is in stock. Then tell the customer the price and take payment into your BSP account. Go and buy the item at the supplier’s price, keep the difference as your profit, and send it by local delivery or have the buyer pick it up.
Reinvest. After a few sales, put a small part of your profit into Facebook ads aimed at buyers in Port Moresby, Lae and nearby areas.
A few tips so you don’t get stuck:
Never take money before you know the item is available.
Start with one product only. Don’t try to sell everything.
Keep a simple notebook with orders, payments and delivery dates, so no order gets lost.
